IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a movement disorder of the gut. Food is moved along the 30ft of intestines by muscle waves, called peristalsis. IBS occurs when these waves lose their normal rhythm and begin to cramp or spasm, contracting too tightly and causing abdominal pain together with other symptoms.
These can include:-
Abdominal pain which may be colicky in nature.
Abdominal distension or bloating with excessive flatus.
Alteration in bowel habit which may result in constipation or diarrhoea, or an alternating of both.
The passage of mucus from the back passage.
A feeling of incomplete emptying of the bowel.
The stools may be of an unusual shape or consistency.
Nausea, Early satiety, Excessive wind (up or down), Urinary frequency, Backpain, Headaches, Constant tiredness, Bad breath, Heartburn, Dyspareunia, Dysmenorrhoea.

The causes of irritable bowel syndrome are still unknown, but it can occur at any age.
It is known that stress and anxiety can aggravate the symptoms of IBS and many people find that their symptoms worsen when going through a difficult or stressful time.
Many people find it difficult to relax from the pressures of everyday life, and many with irritable bowel syndrome have responded to hypnotherapy.
IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME - HOW HYPNOSIS CAN HELP In recent years Relaxation Therapy using Hypnosis has been used to relieve the distressing symptoms of IBS. The technique was originally developed within the NHS but time and resources have restricted its use.
Consultant Clinical Hypnotherapist Rodney Jowett has for several years specialised in IBS RELIEF using Conscious Hypnosis.
The number of sessions varies and they are spread over a period of weeks. They are supported by back-up personalised audio tapes for home use, which are recorded live during selected therapy sessions.

Hello Rodney
I had been diagnosed with IBS in February of last
year and spent 6 months trying a combination of drugs and diet to get it
under control.
There was no noticeable improvement and it was
affecting all aspects of my life - my work was suffering, my restricted
diet and constant discomfort meant that socialising was difficult. There seemed to be no way out of the situation and I was
getting really down about it.
I had heard that hypnotherapy had a positive impact
on IBS as the stomach is affected by stress and anxiety, and a friend
recommended you as she had conquered her fear of spiders through her
sessions with you.
The benefits were immediate in terms of feeling
incredibly relaxed. I found
being able to talk to somebody that understood the intricacies of IBS
really helpful too. It was
the first time that I actually believed somebody would make me better.
After a few sessions, the sustained improvement of
my condition became evident. I
wasn't waking up every single day with crippling stomach ache, I was
beginning to feel more alert and happier - and feeling like I was getting
control of my tummy rather than it controlling me.
I took time to do relaxation at home, initially
every night and found that disciplining myself to take time out to slow
down really helped as well.
In terms of diet, I had become extremely paranoid
about eating anything that was either wheat or dairy, or even too much
fruit and vegetables - which meant food had become monotonous and I was
craving variety. It was only
through your encouragement and support that I (tentatively) started
introducing foods back in to my diet and found that they didn't have the
negative effect I thought they would.
As for my general sense of well being, I feel a
great sense of inner calm now - which I feel has been lacking in me well
before I developed IBS (but I am sure was a major contributing factor). I have found that I deal with certain situations differently,
for example confronting a concern with a friend rather than stewing about
it. I am much more aware of
my body now and am able to read any early warning signs that I need to
slow down or simply just have an early night.
I cannot believe how differently I feel as a person as a result of
your hypnotherapy and would like to take this opportunity to thank you so
much for the work you have done with me.
Although I naturally do have times that my IBS
flares up, these are usually linked with stress and not making time to do
my relaxation and generally look after myself.
The difference is now that I am able to bounce back a lot quicker,
put it behind me and move on positively.
The tools of relaxation are something that I will now always use
to help me through life.
It is also great to know that your support is there
if I need it at any point in the future.
