PUDSEY TIMES Thursday January 22 1998 Rodney the Relaxer
Reporter Christian Cerisola went to Rodney Jowetts' Rawdon clinic and received first-hand experience of what Conscious Hypnotherapy is all about.
As soon as I heard the voice it was easy to see how Mr Rodney Jowett has helped literally thousands of people with conscious hypnosis.
Welcoming me and our photographer into his Practice at Realtex House, overlooking Rawdon Crossroads, Mr Jowett almost immediately had me falling into a deep sleep. But this business about not knowing what is going on and being out of control of yourself or your actions could not be further from what Rodney Jowett practices. "My clients are completely in control and aware all the time," he said. "They become very relaxed. There is no hypnotised feeling as such."
I went to Mr Jowett with something of a simplified view that he would pull out a pocket watch and swing it in front of my face, clicking his fingers to send me off and then again to wake me up afterwards. He basically took me through what he would do with any normal client, albeit in a condensed hour-and-a-half period. Rodney tried finding out as much as he could about myself and what problems or habits I had which I did not like, or the things which I would like to do. I'm not telling you what though, and this is the way he treats every patient, with total and complete discretion – so much so that clients do not even meet in his waiting room. "This is the difference between myself and other hypnotherapists, I am in full-time practice, so I am able to devote as much time as I want to my clients, and I always ensure that there is a long enough gap between patients."
"Whether I feel a patient needs an extra five minutes with me or an extra half hour, if it is going to be of benefit to them, they will have it." He added "I cannot make people do things. I can help them stop doing something they do not want to do, or I can help them to something they would like to be doing."
Although it was virtually impossible to treat me in one morning he did offer me a relaxation session. He asked me to lay down in the "most relaxing room in Yorkshire" and spoke to me with what must be the most relaxing voice in Yorkshire. He was right. I did not go under, did not lose control, and he did not make me do anything ridiculous. Without going into too much detail, it was the most comfortable I have felt about myself in a long time.
It felt like five minutes, but it was actually nearer 25 minutes when he asked me to bring myself out of the relaxation. Fantastic. "It is about filling the subconscious with positive suggestions," he told me. "For example, I have a lot of people coming to me wanting to quit smoking. I give them a sense of pride and pleasure in being a natural, healthy non-smoker."
Mr Jowett, since opening his Practice in Rawdon, has opened another in Harrogate which is now in its third year. Demand continues to grow as people look to alternatives to the more traditional forms of medication. He admits that many of his clients are referrals from GPs, who are accepting that this type of therapy can work.
And the next five years? Mr Jowett has taken a new lease on his premises and said: "When I started hypnotherapy, I thought I might have the ability to help people – now I know I can." "I will continue for as long as I can help others."

WHARFE VALLEY TIMES Thursday January 11 2001 Is it all just in the mind?
Can hypnotherapy really help your New Year resolutions to stop smoking or lose weight? To many, the term 'hypnotist' conjures up images of swinging pendulums, doctors' couches, dark rooms and deep trances. To others it's a genuine alternative to tackling health problems that conventional medicine fails to alleviate. Wharfe valley Times reporter, Sarah Robertson, a self-confessed sceptic, visited hypnotherapist at his Rawdon Practice to find out for herself.
Rodney Jowett has been a Practising Consultant Clinical Hypnotherapist for almost ten years, and has built a wide-reaching reputation for helping people overcome their health problems and fears.
But at his Practice, there is no swinging pendulum or counting to ten to induce you into a deep trance, he talks to you as you are comfortably lying down, until you are completely relaxed. Although you feel as if you are asleep, in Conscious Hypnosis you are not. You become so relaxed that you slip into hypnosis. You are not dominated but in complete control all the time, and can hear everyday noises and sounds.
Mr Jowett said his aim is to allay people's fears about hypnosis: "The truth is that no one can be made to do anything that they do not wish to do." Through hypnosis, Mr Jowett has helped people give up smoking, lose weight, beat irritable bowel syndrome, and overcome fears and phobias. "By the time most people consult me they have tried to sort out their problem, but been largely unsuccessful. This is because most problems lie in subconscious mind. Fortunately though, the solution lies there also, and in that very pleasant state of conscious hypnosis the subconscious mind is open to the power of positive suggestion." Mr Jowett explained how he helped a lady overcome her fear of flying. He said "I had a client who was so terrified of flying she would not go near an aircraft. Now, after a few sessions she can do that quite easily."
Still not sure if hypnotherapy would work for me, I was told that my session would help relax me and was promised I would feel a huge difference. In his consulting room, which is just like that of a doctor, Rodney asked me to lie down on the couch with a blanket wrapped blanket around me. Before the session even started I was already feeling warm and drowsy. Mr Jowett does not sit next to you as he talks, but on the other side of the room. He explained that this not to create a barrier between himself and the client but he feels more comfortable himself working that way.
With light music playing in the background, he began gently talking to me in order to put me in a deep state of relaxation. As I was lying there he talked about being calm and confident. He asked me to imagine tranquil scenes of walking through fields by a river or floating in a cloud. With his soothing voice and the repetition of the words 'relax' and 'calm' I immediately started to unwind and de-stress. As he was telling me to imagine every part of my body relaxing, I could feel tension I did not know I had, leave my body. He repeated esteem building words such as confidence, optimistic, feeling more self-assured and calm.
Although I had been hypnotised for only 40 minutes, I felt a sense of deep relaxation as if I had had a wonderful nights sleep. I did not feel tired though, more revived and invigorated, and the feeling stayed with me. I did not stop smiling all day and felt able to tackle anything that came my way. Mr Jowett explained that the state I had been in is the equivalent of three-to-four hours of normal sleep.
I was amazed at the difference it made and can now see how it helps people deal with their problems. It is not just me that feels that way, Mr Jowett has also lectured Consultants and doctors at a major British Hospital.
By the end of the session, I had not only lost some of my tension but also my cynicism.

YORKSHIRE EVENING POST October 5 1995 – By John Drake Simon switching to the mind game
New pro turning to hypnosis to sort out problems with putter
Simon Hurd turned professional this week and with his target on next year's mega-rich European Tour he turned to a hypnotist to help cure his putting ills.
While his game tee to green was spot on, Hurd, 20, and a plus-two amateur until last Monday, had lost all his confidence once he had a putter in his hands.
"It may sound daft for a 20-year old to be seeking help but I was desperate after the preliminary Tour card school a few weeks ago," said Hurd, the Yorkshire Open champion. He tried to qualify at Hopwood, Manchester, for next month's final school in Spain but missed by four strokes on three under par – after hitting 50 of 54 greens in regulation. "I missed out because I took 104 putts and that's no good on the professional circuit," he said.
"My dad mentioned hypnotherapy and my girlfriend told me to go for it, so I've had some sessions with Rodney S J Jowett at Rawdon and he's been brilliant for me. I was struggling mentally on the greens, I was having bad vibes and feeling like I was never going to hole a putt. I had no such feelings hitting a two-iron over 200 yards in to a green, but stood over a four foot putt was terrible."
Hurd feels he has been helped enormously by Mr Jowett and says "I played in my first tournament as a pro, the Hippo tour at Sand Moor this week, and finished ninth to get in the money. My putting was miles better."
